Bavarian Graduate Study (BAS)

Background:

Based on the requests of several Bavarian universities for graduate surveys at shorter intervals, which are specifically tailored to the information needs of quality assurance and degree program planning, the IHF developed a concept in autumn 2013 to supplement the regular studies of the Bavarian Graduate Panel (BAP). A 1.5-year pilot phase began in December 2013.

The BAS has been conducted annually since 2016. The IHF works together with the contact persons at the universities. The needs are clarified with them and the coordination processes within the universities are coordinated. The BAS is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the participating universities.

What are the goals of graduate research at the IHF?

What design options do the universities have?

The BAS offers an optimal mix of standardization and flexibility. The universities have the opportunity to shape the project and contribute their own ideas:

  • The uniform program of questions is determined jointly by the universities.
  • All graduates of a university or only selected subjects can be surveyed.
  • Each university can contribute up to ten additional questions - permanently or for a limited period of one year.
  • Access to the results, their internal dissemination and publication is determined by the universities.

How often are BAS surveys conducted and who is surveyed?

Each year in November/December, graduates from the previous year can be surveyed. The universities decide which degrees and subjects are included. They can conduct surveys annually or at longer intervals.

The chart below provides an overview of previous BAS surveys and the number of participants.

Which topics are surveyed?

  • Study evaluation: Retrospective description and evaluation of the study programs by the graduates,
  • Transition to professional life: e.g. search duration, number of applications, starting salary, region of career entry,
  • Transition to further study programs: e.g. subject, university, difficulties.

What about data protection?

Responsible handling of data is very important to us:

  • Participating graduates have a right to have their details treated confidentially and stored securely against unauthorized access.
  • The participating universities are entitled to decide for themselves who can view their graduates' feedback and in what way.
  • The BAS team is working closely with the Scientific Institute for University Software at the University of Bamberg to develop a concept for the collection, processing and dissemination of data.
